Background

Quinone oxidoreductase PIG3 (TP53I3) is a ~35 kDa protein. NADPH:quinone reductase which expression is induced by p53/TP53 and is involved in both the DNA damage response through homologous recombination repair, and p53-mediated apoptosis. Catalyzes the NADPH-dependent reduction of quinones, exhibiting a low enzymatic activity with beta-naphthoquinones and a strong preference for the ortho-quinone isomer (1,2-beta-naphthoquinone) over the para isomer (1,4-beta-naphthoquinone). Also displays a low reductase activity for non-quinone compounds such as diamine and 2,6-dichloroindophenol (in vitro). The reduction of 1,2-naphthoquinone concurrently generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), which may trigger apoptosis downstream of p53/TP53.
